E. F. Davies

E F Davies is a wheel potter based in East London.

I make each piece over a couple of weeks. Preparing the clay and making the piece can take a week or two before a piece is ready for its first firing, and another week or to glaze and fire a final time to vitrify the ceramic making it stronger and impermeable to water.

In some of my non standard pieces I use wood ash and dug clay, and I particular like the speckled pieces made with iron rich volcanic rock which when fired, melts out into the glaze.

Generally I fire my pieces twice, the first time to 940 degrees celsius which changes them irrevocably from clay to ceramic but leaves them chalky. After they're glazed I fire them again, to 1240 degrees.
